I switched my daughter to yasmin after trying desogen. I thought that the desogen was making her hair very thin. I was told by a gyn to put her on yasmin. Well, I can tell you that yasmin made her hair so much worse. She stayed on yasmin for 11 months and then stopped. Since stopping, 6 months ago, her hair is really coming out. I don't know what to do anymore. I was told by the derm that it is natural for her to have a TE when stopping the pill, but I can't stand seeing the hair all over the place and looking at her head. I wish I had never put her on any bcp. I must say that she feels 100% healthier not being on any pill.

Hi Angela,

I think a lot of us feel or have felt the way you did. It is such a threatening situation; you dont want your hairs falls out, but it does and a lot. And there is nothing we can do.
I often feel like you; I felt two days ago; my shed is up again for the last 5 days; i have these cycles of two weeks high and then a few weeks lower. I didnt want to wash my hair as my ritual of washing and counting is taking me down too much. I thought: well if I don not wash, I loose hair during the day, but the big bang is during wash. Then I might get it out of my mind a bit during the non washing days. But in stead of that I shedded so much hairs that I had to pick them up all thay long during work. Ugh...I was so frustrated that I washed my hair in the evening, what i Never do. But I needed to get out all the falling hairs during wash, so the shed the day after is less frustrating.
Also; I have no clou what causes my shed and I am so afraid it is my RA meds. But I just cant stop them. The thinking of trying other meds (that might be as worse for my hair) is such a threatening thought that I block that. But I keep on thinking every day: oh boy, what to do! I think of it every every day.
So, yes; I can certainly relate to your story and oh my dear; I wish I could something say to help you. Let us know how you are doing.
Big hugs!

I too am on Yasmin (and ladies - I just started on this lovely site and at 44 and absolutely thrilled to read other's stories ... I've never focused on my alopecia areata until now and with your stories and community support - I feel wonderful :) anyway, to go on...I am on Yasmin (just 1 year so far) and saw this article and wondered too if my hair loss (now more extreme than ever was due to that or my thyroid cancer radiation treatment?) I ask as Radiation is not supposed to cause hair loss but Yasmin I'm told - does. I now need a wig (I'm soo checking out the site to see what wigs you all prefer) and am excited to change out my look now and again...what fun :) ;)

Hi, animallover :) To me, radiation sounds more extreme than yasmin - so this might be what's causing your exasperated loss...

I'm at my wit's end with this though... today marks the 3.5 month mark of this awful shed.... today i lost clumps and clumps... and it's continuing to fall as the day goes on.... i just don't know what to do anymore. My newest theory is that the yasmin + the spiro has caused estrogen dominance and this is why my hair is falling out so much. I'm thinking about cutting back on my spiro dosage but i have no one to turn to to ask about this because my doctor has no clue about it and just prescribed it because i asked him to :( So, i have turned to you guys... what do you think?

Hi Angela,

Have you had your protesterone checked yet? If you do think you may be estrogen dominant, it need not be from high estrogen; it could be from low progesterone. Progesterone normally supports the thyroid, also; so, if you're low in progesterone, you could be somewhat hypothyroid (and it may not show up on lab tests).

I know that when you get your hormones tested when you are on the pill, the estrogen shows up really whacky :( Is it the same for the progesterone? Or will this show up normally no matter what you are taking?

I'm with you, Angela. I'm on the pill continuously and don't know if you can be tested for progesterone while on it. At this point, I'm too afraid to go off the pill for the test for fear that it will set off a huge shed. But with my shed still being very high I'd like to know if it's because of low progesterone.

Are there any natural progesterone treatments that we could try? Something that would help if we had low progesterone, but wouldn't hurt if our levels were normal?? That would be awesome!

Does Adrenal Stress (high cortisol) cause a progesterone imbalance? It seems like i've heard that before and about 2 years ago a doctor that i was seeing put me on Adrenal Calm cream because i had REALLY high levels of cortisol... i used it for a while and then stopped.... but i may start it again. Unfortunately, I don't see that doctor anymore because i got into an argument with her staff over insurance billing... so i can't really go back there again :(

YES, your hair can fall out from that radiation!!!! I shed horrifically just from the tiny amount of radiation they gave me to scan my thyroid.

I don't think I have low levels of progesterone but my estrogen is low and I use a natural progesterone cream with phytoestrogens in it. Check out these sites: http://www.womenlivingnaturally.com and http://www.womentowomen.com - there's some good info on there about cortisol levels as well.
