    Amazing Results! (+ photos)

    Hi

    Quick background for anyone not familiar with my story;

    - massive hairloss sometime between August & Oct last year with no visible shedding (it seriously just disappeared)
    - Gall bladder infection requiring hospitalisation 6 months prior, plus a broken leg and serious stress event 8-9 months prior
    - family history of Androgenetic Alopecia so doctor was dismissive and reluctant to investigate

This week I had a check up with my specialist and had intended to push for a scalp biopsy. However, when he took some photo's to compare where things were I was totally blown away. See attached - my hair is coming back big time!

I had an idea things were improving from my own photo's but this blew me away.

    What worked?

    Well the regime for the last 4 months has remained the same;

    minoxidil 5% + retinoic acid, 2ml, 1per day
    LLLT (laser cap) 30mins daily
General supplement for hair loss + Iron

    Side effect?

    Peach fuzz on the face
    Increased body hair - everywhere!
Headaches initially but stopped after a week or 2
Short dred shed on starting minoxidil
The new hair, in fact all growth in past 4 months, is considerably darker than my original colour (hence rooted/dyed effect in photo's)

All easily dealt with and well worth it.

Maybe it was just TE after all? Maybe it would have come back on it's own?

I know this is a long road and Androgenetic Alopecia is lurking in my future but right now, this feels good.

This isn't some magic formula that will work for everyone but I hope it can provide a glimmer of hope to someone. People can and do recover from this sometimes so why not you?

OMFG!! That's unbelievable!!! Congratulations Nerak, I'm so happy for you! It's incredible how much growth you've had - your scalp is completely covered, your parting looks totally normal, your hairline looks perfect. That's amazing! The darker colour at the roots makes it easy to see just how much hair has grown, and it's a ton in such a short time. I'm so pleased that you've had so much success.

It looks like whatever was causing the CTE has been resolved. Happy for you!

It's weird, recovery (or more like partial recovery right now) brings it's own issues.

I agree with Lily, I think it was CTE brought on by stress, illness and high doses of IV Antibiotics and morphine. I never thought Androgenetic Alopecia would or could decimate your hair so quickly.

But, if this is the case, now what? If my hair was coming back anyway should I drop the minoxidil?

My gall bladder continues to give me problems so this could all happen again at anytime, I am living in fear. I could get it removed, doctor has advised this, but that means more hospitals, stress and drugs which could set me right back to square 1.

Health v Vanity = rock v hard place! A few years ago I would have said that was ridiculous and focused on health but walking around feeling almost bald for 3 months has changed my perspective somewhat.

Too scared to change anything right now so just keeping everything the same, keep on keeping on and hoping for the best. I'll make some decisions later in the year if nothing significant happens in the meantime.

Have you tried diet change for your gallbladder? Yeah, I agree. I would be scared to stop anything! Plus reading all the stories on when you stop rogaine you can lose the hairs. Does make me think it was going to come back anyway but guess will never know! I cant believe how thin it got. I know for me if I take any pain meds I shed tripple in the shower. I am pretty much anti-drug now since my hair loss/scalp issues. So happy for you!

Also, which vitamins are you taking? Was the laser cap expensive?

Too soon to tell if the minoxidil has been helpful, takes about 6 months I think. Why not keep at it for that time, then reassess?

Thanks for all the lovely comments I really hope to be able to return them soon!

I don't think I'm totally out of the woods yet but it nice to enjoy a small victory occasionally.

mycurlyhair - yes, had to change up my diet a lot. Keeping things pretty simple now and doing OK. I know soon enough when I've slipped of the wagon as I get terrible stomach probs, it's enough to keep me focused! Yes, the laser cap was VERY expensive. It is only available through a specialist here so all up cost about $7000nz / $5500us / £3500. Vits are pretty standard hairloss stuff, iron, zinc, biotin, etc.

Congratulations on such great success! I am just wondering how long it took you to start seeing growth? And stop shedding? I have been using 5% once a day for 7 weeks now and see a few at the front hair line but also a lot of fine light peach fuzz ones coming in. I hope they thicken. Did any of yours come in like this at first? I am still shedding some. More some days than others but I think overall it's helped my shed.

    Hi Roxy

my whole experience has been a bit unusual. My hairloss was extremely quick and brutal but my recovery has also been quick. My minoxidil shed only lasted about 2 weeks, it seemed horrendous at the time but my hair was so terrible it didn't end up looking too much worse. As you can see, there really wasn't much left to lose at it's worst anyway. About 2 weeks after the shed I could see growth all over. Within 8 wks of starting I had visible improvement and 4 months on I'm about half way back to normal at scalp level. Obviously that will take a while to reach the longer areas but that's fine, I can wait.

my regrowth came in thicker and darker than my original hair from day one so it's always been easy to see. My original hair was very light blond and all my regrowth has been a fairly dark blond/brown. I don't care, any hair is an improvement and I can always dye it later if it bothers me. I don't think I will though, losing your hair really puts thing into perspective, I don't think I'll sweat the bad hair days anymore!

this journey seems to be so different for everyone. Just because your regrowth is different from mine doesn't mean it won't work.

Thanks for the answers! I'm so glad you have had so much success! It really is a tough road. I have had self esteem issues all my life but hair loss In My early twenties has been absolutely the worst.

Nerak, would you mind telling where did you buy the lazer cap ? Any internet site ? Your regrowth looks truly amazing, so may be lazer cap is really the missing link in the therapy. I am not 100% happy with my hair situation - 8 month on minoxidil.

I live in New Zealand where things are very tightly regulated - hardly any OTC medications, everything must be prescribed.

You can only buy the Lasercap here from a specialist. The version of minoxidil I use, with retinoic acid, is also only on prescription from a specialist. Even the regular GP cannot give it to you. That is why the whole process cost me $7000 NZ!

You may find in the US that you are able to just buy the Lasercap online. If you google it there are some excellent success stories out there.

I don't want to hold this up as some magic formula that will guarantee success, especially considering the cost. My hair loss was classic TE, quick, brutal and in response to a very specific set of circumstances. I never had any hormone, thyroid, or scalp issues and no vitamin deficiencies. There is every possibility it would have come back anyway and I could have spent that $7000 on a new car!

Having said that I know Androgenetic Alopecia is in my family so this is an investment for the future too and I will continue using it at maintenance level as I approach mid 40's and beyond.

I see.. but would you tell me the brand name of the one you have ? There are soooo many on the internet and I dont know which one to chose. I am having an appointment with a trichologist on the 19th (just a check up) to see on a computor wether (and how many) hair did I grew on minoxidil. I am so nervous, because I am afraid that results wont be that great. And yes, my temples look better, but it is not like wooow ! definitely not like your results
