Hi, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I really don't know where to go from here.

I’ve been seeing a trichologist for 2 and a half years now and I am not sure that I am really any better position than I was when I first started going.

I’m early 40’s and have always had fine hair, however about 8 years ago I noticed my hair becoming even thinner.

At the time I was caring for my gran and I put all my worries about my hair to the back of mind. After she passed away I started to become more and more conscious of my thin hair, so I started to see a trichologist.

She started by looking at the following:

    Scalp Health – new shampoo

    Stop using heat styling

Blood test – increase iron, (ferritin supplement 3 times a day, zinc supplement)

There was nothing else that raised concern in my blood results

Anyway after about 6 months there was no change and my hair kept shedding.

She diagnosed me with telogen effluvium and a small amount of female pattern baldness.

My hair got so thin, it was depressing and then she suggested regain, which I’ve been using for a year and a half now.

I originally didn’t want to use this, however after my hair thinned so much I could see my scalp and went to my appointment in tears, I agreed to try it.

I had a massive shed which went on for months and was a bad time and then I started to see new hairs emerging where I was applying the regain.

The new hair filled in the thinness on top and started to grow down and it made things bearable. I was very excited when it started growing back on top.

In the meantime after more blood tests and advice from my trichologist, I came off the contraceptive pill (which I had been on for 24 years), as she thought my hormones could be affected. This was a year ago and I don’t think that this has made any difference unfortunately.

I was vegetarian from my early 20’s and Vegan in the last year. My Trichologist is now saying that my hair loss is probably all down to me going vegan.

I understand that diet can have a big impact and I am very careful to have a good diet with high protein.

My husband thinks it is because I am a big worrier and get stressed easily.

At the moment my hair seems to be shedding more than ever, the bottom (my natural hair) where the regain is not applied is so thin, wispy and frizzy and I really hate it. The top where the regain is applied is ok, but not perfect (but at least I can’t see my scalp at the moment) I feel now though that using the Regain is just a mask and I still have no idea what the real issue is.

I find it soo frustrating as I am told not to use heat, however my hair looks horrible without any styling.

I’m sorry that this is such a long post, I didn’t realise it would be when I started writing, but I’d really appreciate any advice or to share similar stories.

I'm sorry to see no replies to my post, but I thought I'd give an update anyhow as lots of people reading.
I've decided to book in with a new Trichologist. The one I am going to see specialises in hairdressing and wigs/toppers etc.
I'm thinking that I could discuss these other options if my hair continues to get any worse.
I'm not sure about the wig option, but I've talked to my husband and he has made me feel so much better. He is very supportive and although he always says he loves me with or without hair he knows how badly its affected me over the last few years.
Anyhow, I have my first consultation next week, so I'll try and post back with an update then.
For anyone that has been in a similar situation to me, I would recommend the Regaine/Rogaine from my own personal experience as I don't think I would have coped so well without it. Although it's only helping the top part of my hair where I apply it, at least I cannot see my scalp any longer!

I too have the same issues and unfortunately have been dealing with this for 25 years. Months of shedding followed by new growth that can never catch up to the old growth because as soon as it starts to thicken up, another shed starts. I have so many different layers of hair from the constant loss and regrowth. I have tried multiple things over the years but I believe it is a chronic telogen effluvium and female pattern baldness. My Mom and grandmother always had fine thin hair as well. My Dad’s hair is the same way. I gave up looking for answers long ago and just try to live a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes I feel that doctors try to find things to blame patients for when they don’t have answers and I think there’s still a lot unknown about hair loss. I’m sorry you are dealing with this issue but I encourage you to find more support groups such as this. I also would use heat for styling if it makes you feel better; I don’t t think it has made my situation worse and has been the only thing that gives my hair a little body! There is a Facebook group called Wig and Topper help for those with hair loss that has wonderful people that have a lot of experience with helper hair and the group is very encouraging and uplifting. Good luck to you and remember that you are more than your hair!

    Hi Kelant
I have had hair issues for as long as I can remember. Im in my early forties now. Recently though my hair shedding has gone to absolutely normal, best its been in ages. I take NAC (n-acetyl cysteine) and biotin and Biosil for my hair. I believe the NAC has been key in reducing the shed. I also take Ashwagandha and Vitex . I think my hair issues are due to how I deal with stress, im a worrier. So since May my shed is super low, I am seeing more regrowth and for the first time in the last 5 years (worst hair years of my life) I have hope that there will be improvement. I have never tried Minoxidil for fear of the dread shed, side effects etc. I am a Vegan/100% plant based as well. Hang in there - i takes a long time to work out what has caused the disturbance... and then reversing it!

Thank you so much for your replies. Tatum - I think you're right about the heat, it can get very depressing day after day trying not to touch/improve my hair for fear of ruining it more, but I think i'll treat myself a bit more! Thank you for the Facebook group recommendation I shall definitely take a look, I would like more info on possible cover ups etc.
idk - I'm really pleased your shed is normal, that must be such a relief :) I need to control my worrying and this is something I'm really aiming for at the moment, thinking about all aspects of my life, trying more yoga, breathing, slowing down a bit, although work stress always catches me out!
Thank you both for your words of encouragement, it means a lot :)I shall let you know how my consultation goes next week.

Hi, I just wanted to add an update, I've been to see another Trichologist, she also specialises in wigs. She said that I have basically looked into everything very thoroughly and unfortunately couldn't give me any major suggestions to help anymore than what I'm already doing. We looked through some wigs, which was a strange and interesting experience. My hair is very thin and I did find that the wigs I tried on seemed extremely thick in comparison. She has ordered some more for me and I'll see what I feel about those once I try them. I'm really not sure its the route I want to go down, however if my hair keeps getting thinner then I may have too.
Its so strange to see what I would look like with lots of hair, but at the same time its exciting!
Currently I am losing so many hairs every time I wash my hair, probably 200-300 each wash, and then when I comb it though afterwards there's still loads coming out!! I have barely any ponytail left now.
I am now increasing my protein as much as possible and really really making a big effort to relax, not worry, breath and be positive!
I just wondered is anyone else find that wigs can almost seem too thick? I have quite a small head also, but I just thought the ones I tried seemed unnaturally thick. I almost want something that is a gradual increase to what I have now as it would be extremely noticeable if I wore one of these wigs to work!

So I did it, I decided to buy a hair topper and I am really loving it!
It's not been an easy decision but after trying on a number of wigs and toppers I found one that I think works for me. Its not too much hair, some of the wigs looked pretty silly on me as I have a small head and they completely swamped me. The new trichologist cut it a little bit shorter for me, she was very patient as I kept asking her to take just a tiny bit more off the length until it was just right! I still long for my hair to stop shedding and long for my own hair to be just half decent, but unfortunately it just isn't happening. The topper is great and I wonder why I didn't try it sooner now. I'll try and add some pictures to show before and after soon.
