I went to a new endocrinologist today. At first they had me see a resident, then the attending physician. Both of them independently came to the same conclusion: that I have alopecia areata. I tend to agree with this, but I'm going back to a hair loss specialist to confirm. I've actually already seen this dermatologist...I went to see her about my hair loss problems ten years ago and she kind of blew me off. My hair has gotten much worse, though, and I have strange bald spots and the doctors both said it looked like an autoimmune disorder. They said that women with thyroid-related hairloss typically don't have loss as extensive as I do :(
Since I've already been diagnosed with Hashimoto's, which is also an autoimmune disorder, they want to screen me for all kinds of disorders, so I'm kind of freaking out.

    Hi Cat,

What a sad day for you!
I also have an autoimmune disease, but I do not think that the rest of me is now a complete wreck. I guess it is good to check it all out, but I am sure that the one auto immune disease is not related to the other (like if you have one auto immune disease then you have them all!) No.
I hope you feel better soon, we are here for you.

Yeah, they think it's diffuse Alopecia Areata. I have little bald patches, but they aren't like typical Alopecia Areata patches. Also, my eyebrows are thinning and I have almost no leg hair (which is kind of nice, actually).

I hope everything turns out ok for you.

Do you know what tests they're running? I ask because I, like you, have extensive hair loss and Hashimoto's. I wonder if we have the same sort of thing goin' on?

    Keep us posted!!

They want to rule out a fungal scalp infection (the doctors said that it was highly unlikely, but they needed to rule it out) and I believe they called it an "immunity panel." They also want to do a microscopic analysis and pull test (I went to an endo, not a dermo, so this didn't get done yesterday). I'm not 100% sure if I have those exclamation hairs or not. I saw a weird "notch" that I think is like what Merry was talking about elsewhere on the board. I'm going to call my primary doctor for the referral tomorrow. I really hope this derm doesn't blow me off like she did when I saw her 10 years ago! My hair has gotten much worse since then.
