    Hi,
I’m new to the site but have been suffering with on going hair loss following the birth and death of my second son in June 2016. Initial hair loss was definitely post partum and stress induced but it’s still going strong! I have lost at least 50% if not more in volume and lose close to 100 hairs every single day. I know this is classed as normal but I don’t have enough hair to lose that much every day. I do get new growth but my scalp is visible at the front and the back is very thin.
Had a diagnosis of androgenetic loss unmasked by telegenic effluvium back in November and was told by the specialist to try minoxidil 5% twice a day. I suffer from what feels like a burning scalp anyway and can’t put my hair in a pony tail as it hurts so this stuff killed my scalp!! Anyway, has anyone any thoughts on oral minoxidil as I feel this is my only route left? What do I take with it? Is sprinolatone the only option?
Thank you if you made it this far!! I look forward to any advice given x

    Hi Tilly,
I'm very sorry to hear about your son....my deepest condelences.
    Have you tried topical finasteride?
I'm about to either see someone in NY or have an online consult with Bauman medical, and they both prescribe Formula 82F, a combo of minoxidil/finasteride. I've heard finasteride can work when Spironolactone/minoxidil doesn't. Maybe the topical F would be ok for your head? Or maybe it's a concern if you still are in childbearing years...
Oral minoxidil seems to be fine, and maybe better than the topical.
I actually have some...To be honest, it made me feel a little weird (I only took .25), but I'm very sensitive to meds, and I only felt a little faster heart rate and slightly hyper. The usual things that minoxidil can do. I stopped it, and am waiting for consult with these other docs.
You can message me...and I'll post soon on what I find out.
    Best-

    Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I’m happier taking tablets rather than putting anything on my scalp as it is so sensitive to anything different being put on it! I was only planning on taking a small amount of minoxidil with maybe 25mg of Spironolactone if that was the only thing available. I’ll look into the finasteride though to see which may be best. Good luck with your appointment.

Apparently that combo (oral M/S) can be helpful. Definitely some studies done that had positive results. Let us know if it works for you!!

Tilley, can you let me know where you are getting the oral minoxidil? I’ve tried revaluation Rogaine and Formula 82F and got terrible dread shed. I had to stop because it was so bad.
I’m also taking 100mg spironolactane and 5mg of finisteride. Some days I think it’s helping then i’ll Start shedding again out of the blue. Very frustrating. I am getting new hair growth. I have baby hairs everywhere.

Hi I’ve ordered it from thailandpharmacy.net. Yet to see if it actually turns up!!! I’ve ordered the 5mg tablet (think it’s brand name is loniten or something like that.) I have a pill cutter so was going to try and get it as small as I can and take alongside 25mg of Spironolactone. Hoping it won’t cause too much of a shed!!

Linz, how long did you take Formula 82F before shed? How long did you shed before stopping treatment?

I know the shed means it's working, but...is it possible it also might not grow back? Argh.

    How old are you? Thanks!!!!!

I tried it for 2 weeks but couldn’t take it. I was losing a mass amount of hair. I know they say it means it’s working but I heard it can sometimes last for months and there’s no way I could make it through a shed that long

Do Finasteride and Spironolactone cause shedding, too, or only Minoxidil?

"Any treatment that stimulates hair growth, whether minoxidil, finasteride, low level laser or platelet rich plasma can cause an initial shed.
Shedding with finasteride (Propecia) can occur in the first 4-12 weeks and generally resolves."

Found this through Googling, actually written by Jeff Donovan, hair specialist up in Canada. Makes sense that something that promotes hair growth needs to push the resting hair out, first...

But hopefully the finasteride shed is not as dreadful as the minoxidil one...!!!

How bad is the dread shed? I wasn’t on it for long enough to get it. What do your normally lose compared to what you lost in the dread shed? Just trying to mentally prepare myself and limit the damag if I can by taking as little of minoxidil as I can. Sorry for all the questions!!!

My shedding varies so much. Right now, i’m 100-150 hairs a day which sucks but when I’m doing good, it’s 30-50 hairs. The rogaine and formula 82F was about 250-300 hairs a day. I had minor shedding with finasteride and spinolactane but went away after about 4 weeks.
