How to apply Toppik?

Any suggestions on how to apply Toppik to my widening part and crown area? How do I create a natural part? Any suggestions? I just bought my first bottle of Toppik. Do I need to apply the fiberhold spray? I saw there is something by Toppik called "hair fattner"...has anyone used this before?

  2. Hey again :) I bought my first Toppik a few weeks ago for the same reason. I bought the aiming tool that attaches to the bottle but again, still learning how to perfect it.

I read on here that someone placed a pipe cleaner between their part then applied the toppik over it. Seemed like a clever idea. I also bought DermMatch for the part issues. Works well when I have my hair up. Good luck!

@ searching4answers...the toppik I bought didn't come with an applicator. I bought it at Sally beauty supply. I did read about using the pipe cleaner for creating a part...I will need to try it. How do you think it looks for you? Is it noticeable? I bought dark brown but looks almost black...my hair is brown so I might need to get the medium brown color. I actually tried it out on my hubby...he has a crew cut so I figured he would be the perfect model...lol!!! It looked a bit "fake" to me. I am scared it will be noticeable on my scalp...yikes!

@ mycurlyhair ...I am going to try it out either Monday night or Tuesday. I have the appt with the hair specialist on Monday so I want my scalp to be clear and free from any residue. Let's see what she says is going in with my hair.

I tried Toppix, and since most of my loss is in the front could never get it to really apply right - I never tried with the applicator though.

I use Great Hair Day on my front hair line part and find that it works great. I'm still on my first compact and its been like 5 months. The color match worked well for my dark brown hair and I find even if I get some in my part, I just wipe it out with a q-tip and I'm good to go.

I've attached pictures from before Great Hair Day and After.

What is DermMatch? Does it do a better job than Toppik? I have yet to try the Toppik, I did try it on hubby...I feel it doesn't look natural.

Dermmatch is like Joan Rivers Great Hair Day...it's a pressed powder. You apply it directly to your scalp with an eyeshadow-like applicator. I have been using it for years. The instructions say to wet the applicator, rub it in the compact, and apply to your scalp. It turns out muddy and I think rather matte looking. I apply it dry, just like you would eye shadow and I think it works very well. I use that on my scalp directly, then sprinkle a little Toppik at the back to add some fullness. I too find that the Toppik doesn't look right at my hairline.

I love toppik. I use the hair fattner to give my hair a little extra body. Not sticky like mousse. I then use a little hairspray on my spots and then sprinkle on. Wait a couple seconds then I lightly brush to blend. Then spray to hold. I got a shade darker and I really like it. In fact I don't leave home without it. Most of ky Alopecia Areata isnfiooing in but it is thin and mostly white. The toppik kids colors over the white. I have not tried the other brands but they look good too..

To distribute Toppik more evenly I use a soft makeup brush. With the Toppik cap screwed on, I shake the bottle upside-down a few times, so that the powder collects in the cap. I let it sit on the counter, upside-down, for a few moments, to give it a chance to settle, so that no cloud of powder comes out when I open it. To apply it, I dip the brush in the powder, then tap the brush onto select areas of my hair. I find that this way you have more control over where the powder goes, and overall there is less mess.

The makeup brush is I think a foundation brush, quite soft, with medium density, maybe an inch and a half in diameter.

  11. i use toppik

Great hair day? Hmm I need it lol. I use toppik cuz i have a receding hairline similar to a male pattern. This is because I USED to have the thickest hair and i would always pull it back hard and i ended up damaging it so much that now its receding. :( it d[presses me i always wear a headband or wear bangs. But, your photos thats a big difference.

I used Toppik for a long time until my loss was so much that I needed to start wearing a topper. When I used it, I would hit my hair with a light spritz of hairspray, than sprinkle on the Toppik, pat my hair as directed, then spray again.

I wish I wouldn't have attempted this the first time right before I was expected to leave the house. I bought the applicator. I feel that the product bypassed holding on to my hair and instead spray painted my scalp. It looked shiny on my skin and unconvincing. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? I'd hate to waste it. With the product and applicator it was a $55 dollar oops.

    Hi SaraCake,

I think it might be a practice makes perfect thing when applying toppik. I looked on their site and it shows a step by step. I don't see an applicator being used though. Have a look see.

Watched the video. I was holding it a heck of a lot closer to my head when I put it on than that lady. Maybe that was my issue. I'll try again holding the tip farther. Did someone say something about using a makeup brush? That could work too.

What I do with my hairline, is that I separate the first cm of my hairline and pull it over my face, then sprinkle toppik in the horizontal "part" i made. If you apply toppik to the front of your hairline directly it will look fake. But if you do what I said it looks ok. Remember to wipe your face with a wet cloth afterwards, so there aren't any leftover fibers on your forehead!
