For a months now I've been here on this forum reading everbody elses story hoping to find a solution for my hair loss.I have always had full head of hair, thick, strong and long.My hair was my favorite feature.Sadly,in august 2016 I've noticed that my hair feels thinner,at least my ponytail. I started to freak out, couldn't sleep or properly eat. The fact is I have never noticed that I lose any more hair than usual (on a wash day I would lose more, but it was like that since always). From august until now nothing has changed.I still lose hair,it feels thinner, especially on the sides and temples, but the nape of my neck and around ears are the worst. The reason why I worry so much is genetic hair loss. Both my grandmothers have still full head of hair in their 70's but my mother lost her hair after she gave birth to my brother and it never grew back.My maternal grandfather also lost his hair very young, classic MPB pattern. What makes me wonder if I too have some kind of genetic hair loss is the fact that my hair loss looks nothing like my moms. She lost her hair just on top,the sides and back are still thick and I lose hair everywhere (sides, temples, back, around ears) but not that much on the top.

This has started to affect my life SO MUCH that I'm losing weight although I'm eating properly,I can't sleep, I cry almost everyday and I'm afraid to ask for a medical help since I'm only 22 years old and I don't want to hear that the only solution is rogaine :( This is the only place and the first time I have shared this with anyone so I really hope someone could help me,at least to feel better. :(

Side note: I have checked my thyroid, everything normal,my iron levels were always low but for months now (at least 6 months) I've been taking iron suplements,my iron levels are now normaln but nothing has changed in my hair.I'm also putting a mixture of castor oil and rosemary oil over night,2 times a week and using alpecin lotion after washing my hair but nothing seems to be helping....

Have you consulted any kind of specialist?

Unfortunatly,no.I was going to but after I read so much about how doctors just throw rogain and say "it's stress" I gave up.I live in Europe,Croatia and we don't have hair specialists here and I feel like female hair loss is something people are not wiling to talk about. My primary care doctor ordered bloodwork and it came back normal, except for iron and cholesterol. As I mentioned earlier,I take iron suplement since december but nothing has changed.I've been also drinking nettle extract and using onion shampoo.
In the meantime I started to take magnesium, mainly for stress and lack of sleep but since then I've noticed that I loose max. 10 strands daily.I'm so surprised and worried at the same time because I want this to last :( This is the first time since July/August 2016 that I'm not shedding and the only thing I changed is that I added magnesium supplement. I don't know if magneisum deficiency can cause hair loss because I have never come across that this particular deficiency can really cause hair loss.I'll be very happy if there is somebody with the same solution/problem.

I did not mention that I'm tall and very skinny since birth because I'm struggling with gaining weight my whole life.I don't know if that can be a symptom of anything other than thyroid, but I've already tested my thyroid hormones and my doctor said everthing is fine...

Your hair loss could be due to low iron, mine was. It takes a long time for hair to grow back once it has fallen out due to anemia. You must first correct the deficiency before your hair will improve, it took mine two full years but it is back to normal.

I have my fingers crossed that this is the case.I forgot to mention, the inner part of my left eyebrow fell out and it stayed like that for months, but last week I have noticed that it has filled in. I haven't used anything on my eyebrows except a little eyeshadow to fill in the missing part.
As for my hair, I shed only thick, long hairs with the bulb on the end,but also long very thin almost invisible hair here and there, not constantly.I have read that the hair loss caused by low iron can sometimes mimic Androgenetic Alopecia and cause miniaturisation....My hair loss is diffuse with sides and nape of the neck hit the hardest and my part is normal just like the top of my hair.

Have you had your thyroid checked? Thinning eyebrow and hairloss are symptoms of
    thyroid issues.

Yes, in January I think and my doctor said everything is within a range. However,I haven't seen the results because they were sent per email to the doctors office.
Maybe i sholud ask for a copy just to check the numbers,I wonder now if i can have some thyroid issue symptoms if my levels are within a range but closer to the lower border..

I forgot to ask you, how long have you been taking iron supplement before you noticed changes in your hair and when has the shedding stopped?

Your issues sound very similar to mine. I started noticing August 2016. My hair falls out all over. Besides losing hair in the shower, I am constantly finding hairs through out the whole day. My hair also seems to be receding and my bangs are getting so thin. I have always had great hair, to the degree that all my hairstylists have always commented about it. My part isnt wider but you can sure see more scalp than before. I do have a thyroid issue and recently my iron and red blood cell count were lower than normal. This week I went to a functional Dr., someone that tries to get to the root cause of a issue and try to reverse it. I am getting some labs done this week. Will let you know if he finds anything that might help you as well. Hormones can also effect hair loss, so they lab test will cover that as well. Dont give up!

Hey Lois and thank you for replaying.

I also shed hairs trough out the day, even on wash days when I lose so much while blow drying.
I will be very thankful if you replay with some news after you get your lab results.

My next step is gyno even though i visited mine last month and on the ultrasound everything seemed fine.I'll ask for blood work and sex hormones since i've never done that.

i will let you also know what my results and if there is something which my be causing my hairloss.

Did you use to shed hair throughout the day before, I sure didn't. It will be next month before I go back to the doctor for the lab results. June 6th cant come soon enough:)

Yes,but never more than 10-15 hairs. Now I shed around 50 daily and around 100 while washing and blow drying.I know that seems normal to some people, but I've noticed less volume and density all over my scalp especially at the nape of the neck ,above ears and temples.

Do you actually count the hair you lose after shampooing?

No, in my opinion that is a waste of time. Of course if I notice 2,3 hairs I'll remember that but while shampooing and blow drying I've never counted hairs. That would make me even more stressed out...

It would be advisable that you go see a doctor and get a full check up, just to rule everything medical out. If everything is OK, then comes another battle, for now just get yourself checked out. Best of luck and best wishes

I have had 19 months of shedding high numbers. I have thinning hair everywhere. I have the thinning of the inner eyebrows too. I also have the log thin hairs falling out and thin regrowth. My body hair growth has slowed right down. Hair on fingers almost disapearinf gone vellus. My ferritin was 16 when realised hair loss. Was like that for 6 months after i noticed it. Didnt get it above 70 until 2 months ago. For about 14 months of my 19 hair loss i have had low ferritin below 40. Breaks easily snaps. I lost a stone of weight in a week. And a week before that had a month of severe stress couldnt eat or sleep so prob lost a half stone in that month. My sheddig hasnt stopped. I lost no hair during the day before now i touch it and it is everywhere.
